Mission 761i – Classic British Hi-Fi Bookshelf Speakers (Made in England)

The Mission 761i is a highly regarded British bookshelf loudspeaker introduced around 1991, representing Mission’s commitment to delivering engaging, high-fidelity sound at an accessible price. Manufactured in England, the 761i features a distinctive two-way, three-driver bass-reflex configuration, incorporating two 5.25-inch (130mm) Plastiflex-treated mid-bass drivers and a centrally positioned 19mm ferrofluid-cooled dome tweeter. This symmetrical driver arrangement helps provide controlled dispersion, coherent midrange reproduction and a convincing stereo soundstage. Its rigid cabinet construction and mineral-loaded polypropylene front baffle were engineered to reduce unwanted coloration and improve acoustic stability. With its understated black-ash finish and classic British styling, the Mission 761i remains an attractive vintage loudspeaker for enthusiasts seeking traditional British Hi-Fi character.

Technically, the Mission 761i offers a frequency response of 70Hz–20kHz (±2.5dB), a nominal impedance of 8 ohms, and a rated sensitivity of 90dB SPL (1W/1m), making it relatively easy to match with a wide variety of integrated amplifiers and stereo receivers. Its crossover frequency is approximately 2.8kHz, while the recommended amplifier range is commonly quoted at 25–100 watts per channel. The bass-reflex enclosure provides additional low-frequency reinforcement, allowing the compact cabinet to deliver satisfying bass weight without requiring excessively powerful amplification. Measuring approximately 380 × 190 × 240mm (H × W × D) and weighing around 6–6.5kg per speaker, the 761i is well suited to dedicated speaker stands or appropriately positioned shelving. Its 105dB quoted maximum sound pressure level also demonstrates its ability to deliver respectable dynamics for a compact vintage design.

In terms of sound quality, the Mission 761i is particularly appealing for its smooth tonal balance, natural vocal reproduction and enjoyable musical presentation. Its dual mid-bass drivers contribute to a fuller sound than many smaller single-woofer bookshelf designs, while the soft-dome tweeter delivers a generally relaxed treble character that makes extended listening comfortable. The speakers are particularly enjoyable with jazz, acoustic recordings, vocals, classical music and vinyl playback, where their musical warmth and spacious presentation can be appreciated. A contemporary Hi-Fi World review praised their enjoyable, musical nature and surprisingly deep bass, although it also noted limitations in bass control, fine detail and imaging precision. When partnered with quality amplifiers from NAD, Marantz, Rotel, Creek or vintage Luxman, the Mission 761i offers a rewarding introduction to classic British Hi-Fi, combining musicality, practical amplifier compatibility and excellent second-hand value.
