Technics SP10 World’s First Direct Drive Turntable 100V Base Only
RM2,200.00
Released in 1970 by parent company Matsushita (under the Panasonic/Technics brand name), the original Technics SP10 (often called the Mk1) was a monumental achievement in audio engineering. It was the world’s very first commercially available direct-drive turntable.
By eliminating the belts, idler wheels, and rubber pulleys common to the era, Technics connected a slow-speed motor directly to the turntable spindle. This revolutionary layout drastically reduced speed drift and mechanical wear, permanently changing the landscape of both broadcast studios and consumer high-end audio. Unlike its later successors, the original Mk1 features a built-in power supply housed inside the main chassis rather than a separate outboard box.
The Transducer & Drive System
The drive system of the SP10 Mk1 relies on a highly advanced, ultra-low-speed stator and rotor configuration designed specifically to eliminate high-frequency motor cogging.
-
The Motor: A 20-pole, 60-slot electronic commutator brushless DC motor. It operates at 15V with a low current draw of approximately 85mA, ensuring cool operation and long-term component stability.
-
Speed Sensing: It employs a three-phase AC frequency generation winding ($W_{212}, W_{222}, W_{232}$) wound directly alongside the main drive coils. This creates a closed-loop servo feedback circuit that continuously rectifies motor speed into a DC control voltage, compensating for drag in real time.
-
The Platter: A heavy, precision-machined aluminum die-cast design weighing 2.72 kg (6 lbs). It features an inertial moment of $113 \text{ lb}\cdot\text{in}^2$ to provide natural flywheel smoothing, with the integrated stroboscope pattern subtly engraved on its underside.
