Linn Index Speakers 2 Way Speaker Sealed Box British Made 8″ Woofer

The Linn Index represents a pivotal moment in 1980s British hi-fi. Produced in Glasgow, these loudspeakers were engineered as a “boundary design,” specifically voiced to perform with high rhythmic accuracy when placed close to a rear wall. Unlike mass-market speakers of the era that relied on ported cabinets for “boomy” artificial bass, the Index utilized a sealed-box approach for superior transient response.
Technical Specifications
-
The Enclosure: The Index is noted for its rigid, high-density construction. Internally, the cabinets often featured mineral-loaded damping panels to mitigate standing waves. The exterior was finished in high-quality wood veneers (Black Ash or Walnut), reflecting Linn’s “build it once, build it right” philosophy.
-
Driver Selection: The 8-inch woofer uses a stiff, carbon-loaded cone designed for “speed.” Because there is no bass port, the air inside the cabinet acts as a spring, providing a natural roll-off that avoids the “one-note bass” common in cheaper ported designs.
-
Wiring & Termination: Later models (MkII) featured bi-wiring capabilities with high-quality 4mm binding posts, allowing for separate amplifier feeds to the tweeter and woofer to reduce intermodulation distortion.
The Performance The Linn Index is a speaker for the “PRaT” (Pace, Rhythm, and Timing) enthusiast. It does not attempt to reproduce sub-sonic frequencies; instead, it focuses on the critical midrange and upper-bass regions where the “soul” of the music resides. The result is an incredibly fast, articulate sound that keeps up with complex percussion and intricate bass lines without blurring.
