Review
The Technics SU-V4X is an excellent example of Japanese amplifier engineering from the mid-1980s. Its Computer Drive New Class A circuitry was developed to reduce switching distortion while maintaining the efficiency and output capability of a conventional high-power transistor amplifier. With 65 watts per channel into 8 ohms, extremely low rated distortion, and an extended frequency response, the SU-V4X offers an impressive technical foundation for detailed, controlled, and dynamic music reproduction.
One of its greatest strengths is its versatility. The built-in MM/MC phono stage makes it especially attractive to vinyl enthusiasts, allowing both moving-magnet and compatible moving-coil cartridges to be connected without an external phono preamplifier. Separate bass and treble controls, loudness compensation, subsonic filtering, and multiple source inputs make it a practical centrepiece for a complete vintage Hi-Fi system.
For vintage audio enthusiasts, the SU-V4X offers an appealing balance of power, functionality, and classic Technics engineering. It is particularly well suited to efficient bookshelf and floorstanding loudspeakers, including many vintage Japanese and European designs. Its compact, understated appearance and comprehensive features make it an interesting alternative to more commonly sought-after vintage amplifiers from Sansui, Yamaha, and Pioneer. Actual sound quality will depend on the amplifier’s condition, servicing history, and speaker matching.
