The DALI 15a is a classic, relatively rare vintage 3-way standmount loudspeaker produced by the Danish Audiophile Loudspeaker Industries (DALI) in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Often considered the standmount sibling to the larger DALI 18 floorstander, it is highly regarded by vintage audiophiles for its massive cabinet construction and exceptionally smooth, non-fatiguing playback.

1. Driver Configuration & Anatomy

The DALI 15a utilizes a high-quality, pure 3-way driver setup designed around linear directivity and phase coherence:

• Woofer: 10-inch Super Long Stroke woofer. This is a large, high-excursion bass driver housed in a tuned bass-reflex enclosure, built to provide deep, impactful bass extension down to 38Hz without bottoming out under heavy loads.

• Midrange: 3-inch Soft Dome midrange. Rather than using a standard cone, DALI utilized a large fabric dome for the critical midrange frequencies. Acoustic Performance

The sonic signature of the DALI 15a centers entirely around its 3-inch dome midrange. Because a dome dispersion pattern is naturally very wide, the “listening window” on these speakers is immense (140∘ horizontal). Vocals, acoustic instruments, and jazz ensembles sound wide, open, and entirely detached from the speaker cabinets—a characteristic DALI marketed as a “boxless” quality.

The 10-inch woofer is tuned conservatively. It doesn’t provide aggressive, boomy modern “party bass,” but rather a flat, tight, and authentic low-end response. Because it is a 4th-order Butterworth design, the bass rolls off cleanly below 38Hz. Highs are crisp due to the metal dome, but because of the asymmetric 12dB/octave and 18dB/octave crossover slopes, you won’t encounter the harsh, piercing sibilance common in early metal-dome implementations.

Enclosure & Over-Engineering
